Welcome to SPOTLIGHT.vermont.gov...
Vermont is a national leader when it comes to government spending transparency, according to a new report released by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (USPIRG) and the Vermont Public Interest Research Group (VPIRG). One of only eight states to receive an “A” rating, Vermont has made significant progress to increase spending transparency since 2010 when the state received an “F” rating on this same report.
SPOTLIGHT is the State of Vermont’s new financial transparency website sponsored by the Agency of Administration and maintained by the Department of Finance & Management. Financial transparency supports government accountability and allows citizens to see “Where the Money Comes From” that is used to operate State Government and “Where the Money Goes” when it is spent.
Much of the initial information on this website was previously available...if you knew which website to access, where to look, and which report to select. Many of the charts, tables and reports previously available used acronyms and terminology that may have been confusing or unclear to our citizens and other users. Our goal in creating this website was to consolidate existing financial information in one easy-to-find, easy-to-access and user-friendly website, and to educate and inform Vermonters. We believe that SPOTLIGHT.vermont.gov meets these goals.
We hope that you will review each SPOTLIGHT section on Fiscal Transparency on the left for an overview and refer to the Glossary and Key Terms provided in each section. We have tried to use less-technical terminology, explain acronyms, and provide context to make the State’s financial information more accessible.
We will continue to expand the information provided and develop new features and functionality, such as the searchable compensation and vendor payment data for expenditures added in August 2013. Vermont is currently working on an open data source pilot program that will eventually allow access to large datasets with multiple views and whcih are available for download/analysis. We hope you will visit this website often.
